AHSAA Tennis: St. Paul’s and Northridge top 6A Championships after day one

The Northridge boys and St. Paul girls teams have a slim lead over the Mountain Brook teams after day one of the Class 6A division of the 78th AHSAA State Tennis Championships being played Thursday at the Mobile Tennis Center .
Northridge leads Mountain Brook 45-38 while the St. Paul’s girls have a 42-40 lead over the Spartans going into Friday’s final day of competition.
The 6A tournament concludes the AHSAA tournament after the 7A, 4A/5A and 1A/3A championships which concluded on Tuesday.
Three of the four spots in the boys’ No. 1 singles were filled at the end of the day on Thursday, with Trinity’s Timothy Hornsby advancing to the quarter-finals with a 6-2, 2-0 (retired) win over Helena’s Trey Lambert. Mountain Brook’s Whit Davis – who won the No. 2 singles crown in 2021 – beat Chelsea’s Blake Zinda 6-0, 6-0 to move into the quarters to face Hornsby.
Bryson Lyles of Fort Payne won a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 decision over Aaron Aldaz of Arab and Troy Mann of Mortimer Jordan beat Luke Russo of Springville 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 set up a Lyles-Mann match in the quarterfinals.
Spanish Fort‘s Goodwin Holley and Homewood’s Gray Johnson also advanced to the quarter-finals. Holley beat Jeremiah Lowther of Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 6-2, 6-1 and Johnson beat Connor Jenkins of Mountain Brook 7-5, 6-4.
The other quarter-final match was on hold with Hampton Dement of Decatur waiting to face William Johnson of Jasper and Braden Hannig of Northridge and Eli Terry of Hartselle yet to play in the second round.
The No. 1 doubles semi-finals were set with Trinity brothers Samuel Treadwell and James Treadwell taking on Helena’s Lambert and Carson Wood in a semi-final. The other pits Decatur seniors Hampton DeMent and Brady Mann against Northridge’s senior tandem of Hannig and Ethan Wilson.
On the girls’ side, 2021 state champion Pippa Roy of Mountain Brook defeated Jacqueline Alcocer of Northridge 6-0, 6-0 in the second round to advance to the semifinals. The two seniors met in the 2021 No.1 singles final with Roy winning 6-1, 6-0. Roy’s semifinal opponent on Friday morning will be Jasper senior Sophia Poolos, who beat Decatur’s Anna Harbin 6-2, 6-0 in the second round.
Montgomery Academy senior Gabby Barrera and St. Paul senior Libbie Hamilton clinched berths in the other semifinal. Barrera beat UMS-Wright rookie Sarah Ladd 6-2, 6-4 and Hamilton beat Trinity Presbyterian’s Sydney Speagle 6-0, 6-0.
In the quarter-finals of singles No. 3, Northridge second-year Alice Rowley picked up a grueling win over Chelsea senior Carrie Foster 6-3, 5-7, 17-15.
The No. 1 doubles semi-final will feature Decatur’s Harbin and Abby Glover taking on sister team St. Paul, Libbie and Emma Jane Hamilton. The other semi-final match pits Roy and Annie Lacey of Mountain Brook against Ladd of UMS-Wright and sophomore Carol Murray.
