Black bear spotted in lake forest – WKRG News 5
DAPHNE, Alabama (WKRG) – A bear in Lake Forest, footage from Tuesday morning shared in a Facebook post to neighbors on Lakeview Loop of the latest sighting.
“I think it’s pretty neat,” said Mike Malsom as he walked his dog. “It’s unusual, but there are a lot of forests around here and areas where they can go without being too seen.”
On Monday morning, what is believed to be the same bear was sighted in Belforest while crossing County Road 54. “I love the wildlife,” said Matthew Milloway. “Alligators, bears and all that don’t bother me, but this community has a lot of kids, so it’s a safety concern.”
Why here and now? Wildlife expert JJ McCool believes it could be a young male expanding his range and looking for a particular food. “I don’t see as much danger for us as I do for the bear getting run over or something, but it’s quite unique.”
“It’s pretty cool that there is a little bear, or a big bear not a little one, but it’s pretty cool but still nervous because we have little kids playing everywhere and there are a lot of them too” said Tabitha DeVall who lives on Lake View Loop.
Milloway also takes care of all the children. “I wish they could walk around without too much supervision, but if we have bears walking around that’s a bit of a problem.”
There have now been at least two bear sightings in 24 hours. McCool says if you see him stay away. “I hope this bear moves on and goes into a wilder area and out of our hair so to speak.”
Just as a safety measure, McCool suggests that people living in areas where the bear has been spotted wait until the last minute to take out the smelly trash to pick up. This way the bear is not tempted to have an easy meal and perhaps hang around even longer.
