Bronze service seals stolen, Veterans Memorial Cemetery vandalized over weekend
SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WALA) – Law enforcement is investigating a disturbing robbery at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort.
Over the weekend, thieves on the property removed several bronze US military service seals damaging the area in the process.
Dr Barry Booth, who played a big role in setting up the cemetery on the East Bank, said he couldn’t believe it when he heard the news.
“It is so sad to see this incident take place. It is an insult to the veterans who are buried here and who have honored our nation in service. And also a front for the families who come to visit us,” said Dr. Booth.
The value of the stolen bronze seals can reach six thousand dollars. But Dr. Booth says it’s not about the money.
“It’s the quintessence of indifference. And if there is anyone who has served the nation, it is those veterans who have paid the price with time and sometimes their lives,” Dr Booth said.
And now he’s begging whoever did this to do the right thing.
“We’re going to give these people a second chance to look at these seals that they ripped off this wall and hope they turn around and bring them back,” Dr Booth said.
The cemetery has partnered with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office in this investigation. If you know anything, call the police.
