Charter Boat red snapper season begins at Orange Beach for 2021 – WKRG News 5
ORANGE BEACH, Alabama (WKRG) – It’s a big day in southern Alabama. Rental boat red snapper season officially began on Tuesday morning.
One of the boat captains said it best, it’s hard to have a bad day on a boat.
The boats were pulling back just as the sun was rising over Zeke’s Marina and other places on the water. Today’s work began long before dawn and beyond. Deckhands and captains have spent weeks preparing their ships for what they hope will be a good season.
For some of the guests who jump on charter boats, it continues a family tradition.
“We came here about five years ago, we went on the first day and it was a great time and a great experience for our family. This time we decided to bring even more people to enjoy the first red snapper season day at Orange Beach, ”said Colton Keterside who hails from Missouri. His family brought more than 20 people from out of state for the water this morning.
Charter boat fishing is a major economic driver for the region. Most charter boat captains said they had a decent 2020 even with some COVID restrictions – arguing that the destruction of Hurricane Sally had a bigger impact on their business, they hope for a calm 2021.
The 63-day charter boat snapper season ends on August 3.
