DAUPHIN ISLAND, Alabama (WALA) – Dauphin Island Councilman Gene Fox is facing serious charges after being sentenced to Metro Jail. Fox was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with impaired driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the two-vehicle crash happened Wednesday evening (May 18) around 8:57 p.m. Soldiers say Fox continued after the accident.

A “be on the lookout” notice was displayed on Fox’s Toyota 4Runner and it was eventually pulled over by the Dauphin Island Police Department. The Dauphin Island Police Department detained Fox until soldiers arrived at the scene. Fox then sought medical treatment before the Trooper arrived and was transported to an area hospital.

According to ALEA, while Troopers were in the process of obtaining search warrants, Fox refused medical treatment and left the hospital.

Fox was arrested May 20 for driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident. The accident happened on AL 188 at the intersection of AL 193 in Mobile County.

Nothing else is available as the ALEA Highway Patrol Division continues to investigate.

Fox is free on bail after posting $1,750 bond. We’ve reached out to Fox for comment, but haven’t heard back yet.

We’ve also reached out to Dauphin Island Mayor Jeff Collier, who told FOX 10 News he won’t comment until the full investigation is complete.

Meanwhile, Fox has a court date set for June 7.
