Dauphin Island: Returning to the Beach this Memorial Day Weekend | Mobile County Alabama News
DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala (WALA) – What a difference a year makes! Most people spent the last Memorial Day weekend at home or in small groups. Not this year!
As people flock to the Gulf Coast beaches this holiday weekend, those already on Dauphin Island say they’ve discovered the best-kept secret.
“Afternoon drink – the biggest sunset in Alabama,” one man said.
“There are people here – but you’re not overwhelmed with people – so it’s cool,” said William Sullivan of Tennessee.
While some are just settling in for the holidays, others are getting ready to leave after a week of fun in the sun.
“Is it going to be hard to come back to reality after a week? – You know the answer to that – yes,” said Kaitlyn Morley of Memphis.
“But we enjoyed it,” said Caroline Henson of Memphis.
A dramatic change in the waves this weekend prompted beachgoers to jump in and test the waters.
“How is the water today? – Quite warm, it’s really nice. A little choppy – just because of the wind,” said a young man.
It is a public holiday for “Location Chaise N ‘Rays”.
“We’re making money,” said Andrew Forte, of Chair N ‘Rays Rentals.
A sign that things are improving … Umbrellas, chairs and jet ski rentals sold recently.
“Last weekend was our first weekend, it was the first time in 9 years and the business continues to grow. Business is great – it’s booming – we love it,” said Forte.
And after a year of COVID challenges – everyone loves the freedom to travel again and appreciates the little things a lot more.
“Kind of taking for granted what you had before – now we’re getting the better of it,” Sullivan said.
“My family – we travel a lot and that has obviously changed this year. So it’s nice to have us all together. We have a great group of friends here – there’s like 19 of us … So we I probably wouldn’t have done it a year ago, said Morley.
Crowds were moderate on Friday, but they expect the numbers to definitely increase before Saturday, Sunday and of course Monday.
