HUNTSVILLE- It wasn’t much of a surprise that the UMS-Wright of Mobile high school golf powerhouse won its 26th AHSAA Men’s Golf Championship on Tuesday, claiming the Class 5A crown. It was no shock that the Mountain Brook boys won their 11th title with the 2022 Class 6A State Title.
The biggest buzz came in Class 4A, where the Haleyville boys shot consecutive rounds of 297 at Robert Trent Jones Hampton Cove Golf Course in Huntsville to win the Class 4A State Championship – the Lions’ first in school history. And on the girls’ side, Mars Hill Bible (1A/3A), Pike Road (4A/5A) and UMS-Wright (6A) each won their first state golf championships.
Tuesday’s round was one of the best top-to-bottom games as 34 of the 40 teams competing in the 2022 state championships improved their team scores from day one to day two. He was also highlighted by a hole-in-one by Peyton Preston of Lauderdale County. on par-3 #14 of the Class 3A competition. He finished seventh overall in the 3A men’s competition with a two-day total of 167.
Class 6A boys’ champion Mountain Brook shot 1 of 289 to finish with a total of 590 – just 14 shots over par – as the Spartans won their fifth straight state crown since 2017. Vestavia Hills shot 2 of 290 on Tuesday and also completed a total of 590 to win the Class 7A boys titles. Haleyville’s Class 4A total of 594 was the third best team total in the 36-hole tournament. The UMS-Wright boys had a total of 611 in Class 5A, Bayside Academy won its third state title since 2013 with a total of 643 in Class 3A, and in Class 1A/2A rivals Wiregrass Elba and Brantley fought to the wire before the Tigers emerged as the repeat state champion – in one fell swoop. Elba had a total of 665 teams and Brantley shot 666.
Spain Park and Huntsville finished tied with 452 teams overall in the Class 7A Women’s State Tournament. Both teams finished 20 over par – with a team score comprising each team’s three best scores. The state title was decided by the tiebreaker (A) of the state tournament procedures which compares the results of entrant #4 from each team. The Jaguars won the tiebreaker and the state title thanks to a 79-76 run by Courtney Johnson – 155 overall – who tied for ninth in the 7A competition.
UMS-Wright won the 6A title with a team score of 465, 5A State Champion Pike Road shot 468, and Mars Hill won 1A/2A with a team score of 502.
The low round on Tuesday was handed over by Chase Kyes of Spain Park, who had a 67 to finish second overall in Class 7A to Jack Mitchell of James Clemens, who had a 68 in each round for the lowest total of 36 holes of all in attendance with an 8-under 136. Vestavia Hills’ Ward Harris carded a 3-under 69 to lead the Rebels to the 7A state title.
Hartselle’s Jinger Heath had the lowest round of the tournament on the girls’ side, shooting a 6-under 66 on Tuesday to finish a shot behind UMS-Wright Class 6A girls’ low medalist Frances Brown. Brown rode rounds 71-69 to 140 to lead the Lady Bulldogs’ race for state champions. Heath fired 75 shots Monday and finished with a total of 141 over 36 holes.
Hewitt-Trussville’s Molly Davidson shot back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish 4-under 140 to capture the Class 7A low medalist. Auburn’s Kate Ha also shot a 70 on Tuesday to finish second at 143. Gabriella Nicastro of Huntsville finished third overall with straight rounds of 72 and a total of 144. Alexandria’s Lauren Sechrest had a 73 on Tuesday and closed with a 149 to earn the Class 4A/5A low medalist over Beka Yang of Pike Road in one shot. And in the 1A/3A class, Brindlee Mountain’s Ella Cothran recorded the second-lowest round on Tuesday with a 5-under 67 and finished with a total of 3-under 141 to take the 1A/3A low medalist by 10 strokes.
Mountain Brook’s Tom Fischer shot the Class 6A low round with a 4-under 68 and finished deadlocked with St. Paul’s Fleming at 1-under 143 for the tournament. Both earned co-medalist honors. Guntersville’s John Bruce was 3-under 69 to earn low medalist honors (141) for the Class 5A state champion Wildcats.
