Residents of Dauphin Island brace for windy conditions on Thursday | Mobile County Alabama News

Wednesday was definitely a windy day on Dauphin Island, but wait until Thursday.
This is when the wind advisory will come into effect.
FOX 10 news spoke to a few people taking advantage of the windy conditions on the water.
As the winds are expected to pick up on Thursday, people have come out to prepare ahead.
“Oh the winds picked up yes,” said Mobile resident Donna Mackin.
Mackin came from Mobile just for the night.
She says she came just to check things.
“I came down to clear some debris from the house in case, I don’t know, we were expecting high winds,” Mackin said. “So I want to make sure we’re all tied down and there’s no furniture outside.”
Although she says she is used to the conditions on the island, she always follows the weather so as not to be caught off guard.
“Oh yeah, we follow the weather all the time,” Mackin said. “And we’re making plans, arrangements. We have a house right on the gulf side, so yeah, we have to plan.”
A family traveled from New York to escape the cold.
Oriel Danielson says it would have been better if it hadn’t been so windy.
“At night when it’s very windy the house was shaking, we thought it was like an earthquake or something,” Danielson said. “But we thought it must be the wind. I don’t know if it’s normal, the house shaking, if it’s something here.”
Gusty winds can make driving difficult on Thursday and be sure to secure all loose items.
If you must drive in windy conditions, here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Slow down: if you speed up in windy conditions, you risk losing control of your car
- Watch out for larger vehicles on the road, such as buses or 18-wheelers: a sudden strong gust of wind could tip them over
- Watch out for objects on the road, like tree branches and other debris that may get in your way
