NCAA rules prohibit coaches from commenting on unsigned players, but South Alabama’s Kane Wommack said his team’s work in building its 2022 roster is far from done.
“I’m excited to meet some of the needs of this team, both in terms of our roster depth and overall talent,” Wommack said. “I think as staff after Year 1 we recognize what we need and how to meet it from a recruitment perspective and in the transfer portal. We have been on the lucky side of the transfer portal and that has been positive for this program. We haven’t lost a lot of players that we want to keep and we’ve gained a lot of players that will improve our team.
Southern Alabama signed 11 high school and college players in December, including three who have already signed up and will attend spring training: running back La’Damian Webb, defensive back Marquise Robinson and player offensive lineman Kenton Jerido. Webb and Robinson are college transfers, while Jerido enrolled early after graduating from Northridge High School in Tuscaloosa.
The Jaguars have also added nine players from outside the transfer portal since the end of the 2021 season. Quarterback Carter Bradley (Toledo), offensive lineman Dontae Lucas (Florida State), tight end Damarcus Thomas (Ole Miss), defensive linemen Daniel Foster-Allen (Auburn) and CJ Person (Indiana), linebackers DK Bonhomme (Indiana) and James Miller (Indiana), and defensive backs Jalen Jordan (Ole Miss) and Jamar Richardson (Ole Miss) all signed up in January and will be participating in spring training.
The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Moss was contracted to Mississippi State for several months, but the Bulldogs apparently backed out of signing him. He had 87 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and five sacks in two seasons in Biloxi after transferring from Belle Chasse High School (La.).
Tuazama (6-6, 250) played the 2020 season at Syracuse before transferring to East Mississippi Community College last season. The North Carolina native has totaled 32 tackles and six tackles for loss as a redshirt rookie, and also has offers from Marshall, Western Kentucky and Texas-San Antonio, among other schools.
Deravil (6-1, 200) played two seasons at Garden City (Kan.) Community College after initially signing with Bethune-Cookman while out of high school in the Miami area. He’s had 32 tackles, two interceptions and 12 pass breakups in 2021, and also has offers from Georgia Southern and Florida International, among other schools.
South Alabama is also expected to add 8-10 newcomers through the transfer portal over the summer. These additions will only come after the end of the spring semester.
Southern Alabama will begin spring football training on March 18, a Friday. The annual Red-Blue spring game will take place on Saturday, April 16 at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
