This comes from Google Trends. And while it’s humorous, it’s also surprisingly true. The number one word that West Virginians ask Google how to spell is…..West Virginia.

Wow.

And this research was inspired by the young teens, and younger, who participated in the National Spelling Bee the other night.

For the first time in history, the Bee had to work “overtime”. The 2 finalists were tied, ran through a certain number of words, and then the contest proceeded at lightning speed. They propelled words no one else in the world has ever heard of.

They are 13 and under, and they know how to spell words, and meanings, origins, etc.

Want a sample of the words they said seemingly effortlessly?

Myricetin – refers to a yellow crystalline dye obtained from many plants.

Otukian – relating to or constituting a branch of the Bororoan language family.

I knew that one…no one ever said.

Congratulations to all the young people in America who have gotten off to a great start by being very accomplished.

Now back to Google search.

Some of the other state words that people search for the most are bearable in Washington, D.C.

Pneumonia in Tennessee.

Missouri’s #1 word they can’t spell is dessert.

The Oregon word is awkward. No, that’s actually the word – clumsy.

Here is that word from Maine.

Actively. This means that you no longer need to actively search for the word.
