Theodore High / AD football coach Eric Collier charged with assault
Eric Collier, football coach and sports director of Theodore High School, is one of four people charged with third degree tort assault after an incident on May 8 in Bayou La Batre.
A Tuesday release from Det. Cpl. Robbie Morrow of the Bayou La Batre Police Department identified Wayne Eric Collier Sr. (trainer of Theodore), Wayne Eric Collier Jr., Shawn Jerome Collier and Hayden Aaron Collier as the “main attackers” in an incident on the beach in the western end of Île Dauphin.
Warrants have been issued for all four.
Morrow’s release said investigators spoke with the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office to search for felony charges. The Mobile County DA office ruled the crime as a misdemeanor and he was referred to Bayou La Batre City Court.
According to the official report:
An incident occurred on the beach at the western end of Dauphin Island. Following this incident, several messages containing threats of violence were sent to several people still on the island.
Over the next two hours, several more messages were sent by an individual indicating that he expected the group to return to the docks in the town of Bayou La Batre where he and others were waiting. This individual even sent photos of the victim’s vehicles and the dock area to make sure he was actually waiting.
At around 6:50 p.m., the group began to park in the quayside area of the town of Bayou La Batre. The victim-occupied ship was then attacked by several assailants even before the ship reached land. Several victims were dragged out of the ship, assaulted with hands and feet and even held underwater, causing the victims to fear for their lives. The injuries inflicted on the multiple victims ranged from bruises to the head, face and body to broken facial bones. One victim received 10 stitches as a result of this premeditated attack.
Eric Collier could not be reached for comment. Mobile County Public School Communications Director Rena Philips said MCPSS is aware of the situation and will look into it.
Collier is 48-38 years old in eight years as Theodore’s head coach. The Bobcats have reached the playoffs for five consecutive seasons, winning Class 7A, Region 1 twice.
Collier was also the head coach of Alma Bryant for four years.
