Transfer to Kansas Karon Prunty joins Gamecocks football
South Carolina took to the transfer portal to get the much-needed help in high school.
Kansas transfer Karon Prunty announced his commitment to the Gamecocks on Saturday.
“Spurs up,” he said with a graphic from Gamecock posted during a live video on Instagram on Saturday night.
Prunty is the ninth transfer and the third in a Power Five conference to commit to playing for USC since Shane Beamer was appointed coach in December.
This is the seventh commitment USC has made in the past week. Three-star defensive lineman Jamaal Whyce signed on Sunday, while three-star safety Peyton Williams announced on Monday. Three-star offensive lineman Cason Henry signed up on Saturday.
Prunty entered the transfer portal this month and traveled to South Carolina two weeks ago. He visited Tennessee last weekend and made his decision between USC and the Volunteers.
Prunty will be eligible immediately and fills a big need of the Gamecocks in defense. South Carolina lost Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu to the NFL. Jammie Robinson, Shilo Sanders and John Dixon all opted for the transfer.
The 6-foot-1, 189-pound Prunty started Kansas’ nine games in freshman. He made 26 tackles, tied for the nationwide lead among freshmen with 10 assists and kept his opponents at a 38.5% completion percentage.
Prunty was unable to touch down last season, was the Honorable Mention of the 12 Big 12s, and was selected to the 247Sports Freshman All-American squad.
The Virginia native was a three-star prospect by 247Sports Composite for the 2020 class. He initially signed up for Liberty, returned to Kansas in December 2019, and signed up in early 2020.
