University of Mobile: University of Mobile announces directors of new anesthesia nursing school
MOBILE, Alabama –
Hunter Speeg, DNP, CRNA, also joins UM School of Nurse Anesthesia as Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director.
Most recently, Hicks was Assistant Professor and Associate Track Coordinator of the BSN-DNP Nursing Anesthesia Pathway at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB).
During her tenure at UAB, the nurses’ anesthesia program expanded by over 100%. He was instrumental in converting the UAB Anesthesia Nursing Education program from a Masters-level degree to the now required doctoral endpoint. His role was to design and develop the curriculum and to manage the didactic preparation of all nursing students in anesthesia. Under her leadership, the results of the nurse anesthesia program improved during a period of rapid program growth.
Hicks received the Dean’s Award for Innovation in Simulation Education in 2016 and was nominated by his students for the AANA Didactic Instructor of the Year in 2017.
In addition to his work at UAB, he is an expert lecturer in clinical sciences for Valley Anesthesia Review, a nurse anesthesia board review course given several times a year across the country. In this role, Hicks has helped over 1,000 registered anesthesia nurses prepare for the National Certification Examination (NCE).
A native of North Carolina, Hicks has resided in Alabama since 1989. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Auburn University in 1999 and worked as a college and high school teacher for three years, before returning to Auburn. . He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2004 and worked as a Critical Care RN at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, before enrolling in an anesthesia nurse training program.
Hicks graduated from UAB with a Masters in Nursing Anesthesia in 2008 and has worked as a clinical CRNA since completing his anesthesia training. He obtained a doctorate in nursing practice from UAB in 2015, completing his graduate studies.
He is a sought-after continuing education speaker, having provided local, regional and national content for CRNAs in almost all settings. After years of working as a CRNA staff member in the Baptist Health System, he maintained a busy nurse anesthesia practice in central Alabama, providing anesthesia services in a freelance office. His clinical interests include obstetric anesthesia, regional anesthesia, non-opioid / reduced techniques, and total intravenous anesthesia techniques. Recent publications focus on pharmacology and genomics.
Hicks is an active member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetist and the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists, for which he has served on the board of directors and on various committees. Its service is focused on expanding the practice of nurse anesthesia in Alabama to full scope as well as continuing education based on pharmacology.
