What a phone scam masquerading as Alabama Power looks like
MOBILE, Alabama (WKRG) – Alabama Power officials are reminding customers to beware of scams requiring money. A Saraland customer immediately understood the latest scam. If you receive a similar call, you might hear a robotic voice saying these words:
“This is an automated message from the Alabama Power disconnect service (pause) electricity company (pause) to inform you, today you will experience a service disconnection in 30 minutes due to non-payment on the account.
One of the keys to this scam is to make people believe that there is a sense of urgency and that the money needs to be paid right now. Amy Davis found the recorded message on her voicemail a few weeks ago and shared it with us to try and help others.
“I used to work in telecommunications and there is no such thing as a ‘disconnect service,’ Davis said in a recent interview. Alabama Power officials say they will never call to demand immediate payment. Beth Thomas with Alabama Power says she’s happy to see some customers savvy enough to recognize a con artist.
Beth Thomas, Alabama Power: “It makes us feel good, and we hope people continue to share information with friends and family who may be vulnerable to these scams,” Thomas said.
Thomas says the power company will never require payment by text or gift card. These are signs of a scam to begin with.
The company wrote about this scam almost a year ago. Their article has more tips on how to recognize it.
